The Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) on Thursday reviewed the performance of Kharif crops and the production plan for Rabi crops (2021-22) under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Syed Fakhar Imam.
In a meeting, the committee was informed that cotton production in 2021-22 was expected to be 8.4 million bales from an area of 1.9 million hectares, showing an increase of 19.8% in production over the previous year.
Sugarcane output was estimated at 87.67 million tons from an area of 1.27 million hectares, an increase of 8.2% and 8.7% in production and area respectively over the previous year.
Similarly, rice production was estimated at 8.84 million tons from an area of 3.5 million hectares, a rise of 5% in production and 5.8% in area.
Maize production was estimated at 9 million tons from an area of 1.4 million hectares while moong output was estimated at 267,600 tons from an area of 294,700 hectares, a rise of 30.8% in production and 27.3% in area over the previous year.
The production of major and minor crops like wheat, mash, gram, potato, lentil, onion, tomato and chilli was also discussed in the meeting.

The committee had fixed the target of wheat production at 28.9 million tons from an area of 9.2 million hectares.
Likewise, the production target for gram had been fixed at 559,000 tons, potato at 6.028 million tons, onion at 2.421 million tons and tomato at 621,000 tons.
The committee was informed that certified seeds would be available for Rabi (2021-22) crops according to the requirement.
During the Rabi season, provinces would be allocated 26.91 million acre feet (MAF) of water. Prevailing weather conditions were supportive and shortage was manageable, the meeting was told.
