LHC to hear expired stents case on 27th

Lahore High Court’s Justice Shahid Waheed fixed October 27 for arguments on a petition seeking action against alleged use of expired cardiac stents at Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC).
Petitioner Sardar Farhat Chandio had made respondents the Punjab government, health secretary, PIC administration, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), inspector general of police and others.
He contended that the matter of insertion expired stents had surfaced recently. He stated that a mafia was playing with the lives of the patients and destroying the hospital’s image.
He prayed the court to issue directions for proceedings against those found involved in the scandal and submission of the details of the action faced by them.

The issue reportedly surfaced when an official of the stores department wrote a letter to the PIC medical superintendent, revealing that expired stents had been implanted in several patients.
He stated that the institute had written to the company concerned to replace the stents, followed up with reminders but all in vain.
The petitioner requested a probe to ascertain why the stents were not used before the expiry date and why the company had not replaced them.
